Engine cutting out.......

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by westie, Sep 3, 2011.

  1. Hi guys - I think I have run the fuel down too low on my camper and some crud from the bottom of the tank has got into the system which has caused running problems. It starts ok but then it will cut out not long after setting off and also coughs and splutters. I'm going to put a couple of cans of fuel in it but not sure if there is anything easy (I'm no way a mechanic!) that I can do or check to help fix it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  2. You'll need to clean out the carb jets.

For a quick fix you could try the Italian tune-up: take the air filer off, start the engine and give it some revs, then place the palm of your hand over the carb air inlet. The engine will stop but the suction should pull any muck out of the jets!

Stripping the carb would be better, but the Italian tune's worked for me a few times and got me home.

    Good luck
