EMPI hurst shifter install

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Andyvan1, Feb 22, 2019.

  1. Hi, I have a brand new EMPi hurst shifter which Iam considering using in my van to replace the stock shifter.
The front bush and rear coupler in the gear linkage mechanism were replaced recently, but not the shuttle cock type bushes, gear selection is good/ ok but with plenty of slop!
Has anyone fitted one of these EMPI shifters and how did it go?
It looks easy ( two bolts and a spacer) ....but I had about 5 hours of messing around last time I decided to move the reverse lock out plate on the stock set up to get all gears working well
Will I be going through the same pain again and is it worth it?

Please let me know ur experiences

Not got one fitted to my crew cab but I had a genuine Hurst shifter in my old Karmann Ghia.

I can honestly say it was the best shifter I have tried.

That list included CSP, Empi Eliminator, Vintage Speed and stock.

Never tried a Berg but I think you’ll like the Hurst. If I recall correctly it reduces the throw by about 40%.

I’ve got a stock shifter now with a short extension to save me leaning to one side to reach it.

    Not the best picture, but...

  3. I took my EMPI off last year as it was difficult selecting first as your knuckles hit the handbrake even when it is released - I have fitted a CSP instead - much better.

For the money, I think it’s 70 of the best £’s I’ve spent on my bus!

(But saying that, it’s only done about 400 miles since fitting!)

The EMPI shifter is a pain to install as it needs a lot of tweaking .. I drove around with a socket spanner and a small hammer to get it 100% and then the hand brake needs to work at 7 clicks or less.

I had it in the bus when I bought it, I have driven 72000 miles with it since 2010. It has needed bits welded back on twice ...

  6. Had mine about 10 years, still ok. As above did need lots fettling to get to adjusted initially.

Easy to fit and it worked fine but I found it was biased towards the right which wasn’t good for my LHD bus. It’s for sale if anyone is interested, only been used for a few miles.
