EMPI carb for 1600. Leaking again!!!!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Joyceethebluedevon, Sep 28, 2011.

  1. We fitted a bog standard EMPI carb(for our 1972 1600) about 3 weeks ago. It leaked petrol from the front of the casing where the EMPI badge is. I took it back and swapped it.

Yesterday, I found that one was leaking from the same place.

If you have bought one of these recently, please check it. It could be a bad batch or me being unlucky. Bought it from GSF, they have been great about it. :)

  2. it's a good batch if the engine runs

  3.

The Bocar ones are terrible, I can't imagine the EMPI ones being worse.

My Bocar one has stiff linkages, spigots that pulled out, terrible casting, and misaligned linkages. It did come with a really good gasket though - I kept that.

    Empi in crap quality shocker!!

Bocar are crap too. On mine, I could wind the air bypass screw right in, or remove it completely and it made no difference to how it ran...

  8. i don't know about this kind of stuff. I just wanted to people know that their carbs could be leaking fuel.

Ditch the Empi and dont buy a Bocar. Go for a stock Solex and refurb if necessary.

You can but pre re-furbed ones on eBay for circa £100

  11. i had an empi which was the bane of my life for a year - then got a cheapy from GSF which runs perfect.

i think its luck of the draw with carbs

  12. Empi are shocking quality, mind you Webber and Bio are the look of the draw as well, stick with Solex. The others are just a waste of money. 8)

  13. Well this is not good thought i would pop on here quick before i bought a new carb for my 76 1600 twin port and was looking at the empi epc carb kit on vw heritage but now i don't know what to do thought they where supposed to be better quality? ??? how much are they from gsf? and is it just better to buy a new solex??? :help-sos:

  14. Id go for a rebuilt solex dude

  15. i always say use eurocarb for your carbs they have good kit

  16. Good look on getting a new Solex, rebuild is a better option as Paradox suggested. The guy who set up my Solex's said he has never got a Webber, Bio or Empi to set up completly correct.

  17.
  18. I bought a bug with an EMPI carb that leaked in the exact same place :(

  19. Are the one's that gsf sell the copy one's (bocar is it) as i already have a new one of these fitted and it is nothing but trouble! I have emailed a company i have found called carburetter exhange http://www.carbex.demon.co.uk/index.html and he didn't list one for my van so i emailed him but had no reply :( so am i better buying a old one off ebay and refurbing it? :-

  20. I bought a new carb from GSF over 2 and a half years ago but it didnt have any makers name on it! I took it off on Monday though as it started leaking from the spindle. I have dug out my old Solex that I attempted to rebuild and put it back on... not road tested yet but its ok so far!
I would like a new carb but have been put off Empi stuff. I am tempted by twin carbs but cant afford them yet!
