Electrical woes

  1. Howdy
Nearly got the bus to a roadworthy state (well it goes) and it just needs its bottom welding now (no nasty surprises I hope)
having a spot of bother with the indicators & the wipers, neither of which work
I understand that the problem with the indicators is most likely the earth on the relay as I get a constant light on the dash when ever the indicator stalk is used or the hazards turned on.
have taken off the fuse box but cant see the relay anywhere!
no fuses have blown. could the faults be related
thinking about it. the blower & the washers are not working as well!

have a look at your hazard warning switch it may have bent connectors or similar - relays are below the fuses under a plastic cover .

  3. hello mate i think your relay is on the back of fuse box just unscrew the 2 screws holdind it in and ease it out
for your wipers have a look at the earths behind dash on fresh air box and one going to wiper motor body it is also worth checking all wires are still attached whilst you have fuse box off as one of mine had come adrift causing me problems

  4. what u got mate, ?dynamo or alternator? also , re the fuses , as i discovered recently ,sometimes they will look fine and dandy but replacing them can be a good investment ,depending on their age,as can spinning them around on their seats.

  5. Bus has an alternator in it!
will have a look at the back of the fuse box and switch at 1st chance!
Thanks for all your help :)

have you tried new bulbs in the indicators ?

  7. yep, tried new bulbs but no luck there
will swap all the fuses around too!
any idea what ampage the white torpedo ones are?
cant' find them in my local car shop

    8 amp i think

  10. had a look at the relay and cleaned the contacts. replaced all the bulbs, checked the fuses. no joy yet. going to tackle the switch next. Are they easy to take out?
Has anyone got a diagram of what fuse is what?
I guess it will be easier to get at the electrics if I take out the glove box & the radio?
already got rid of the parcel shelf. going to put it in classifieds if anyones interested?

  11. still no joy in getting the indicators to work. changed all the bulbs and fuses that I think are relevant. there is a circuit between the positive and negative connections in the bulb holder. I think it may be the relay. is there anyway of testing them?
solved the windscreen wiper problem. it is mainly lubrication but they are still slow (& squeak ) and only seems to be working on one speed so switch may be at fault in the indicator stalk?

Work backwards methodically, is there any power to the bulb holder if not is there any power to the switch, then flasher relay then to the fuse once you find power going in and nothing coming out you've found your faulty item,
If there's power to the bulb holder and the bulb is ok then you've got a bad earth.

  13. Cheers for that. will try this method before trying to take the glove box out (which reading up on it, isn't that easy) or if I need to get at the switches , is it easier to take the top of the dash off?

  14. O.K there is no power to the bulb (well it looks like there is half a volt to the front indicators which looks like a short?) so switch next. how do you get them out? is there a screw on the back? Managed to get glove box out o.k so it is all a bit clearer there now. clearing out the detritus of previous electrical installations..... two obsolete arial leads etc

you should have 12v on the white cable at the flasher relay marked (+49) with the ing on

    if you have

try bypassing the flasher relay short the white cable and blue cable to prove its not that.

    If that doesn't work
On the hazard switch Short out the blue (49a) to black/green(R) and right hand lights should come on or black and white (L) and the left hand should light

  16. Kevin nearly passed his MOT but for two problems. firstly, someone had put trendy blue headlights on him (which were also LHD) and his main beam indicator wasn't working) fixed the main beam indicator but now has no generator warning light and one of the indicator dash lights flashes whenever the engine is on. had too dissconect the fuel gauge because that would tick along with the flasher and melted one wire! has anyone got an illustration of the fuse box?
2nd from right on the box there is a green wire (the melted one was piggy backed on to this) anyone got any idea where it goes

  17. oh, and the oil light is flashing as well with the indicator warning light :(

  18. The fuse effects the
Oil warning light, Alternator light, Turn signal warning light, Gas gauge
But what could I do (or did do to it) to make it do all these weird things? Ok worked out where green wire goes, it is the power to the hazard lights. There was a black one piggy backed to it. looked like it went to fuel gage. is this right?

  19. looking at the fuel gauge it seem that it was wired up wrong with the plus & minus reversed but it could be that it has been installed wrong (after all, everything else in the bus was) the fuel gauge has one brown & one white wire coming out of it. can anyone confirm which is - and which is +?
    cheers

  20. update. have cured the flashing turn dashboard light but now have no turn signal, oil or generator light. main & side light indicators working fine ironically. havn't dared wire up the fuel gauge again
