  4. That's what I thought.
I spoke to Edmondo Bottheggi today, after whom the Bus was named. :)

Why did you name it after him?

  6. He was the guy in Rimini who found the Bus on a farm he then negotiated with said Farmer and arranged for me to collect at a later date.
We used to go out for drinks with him when we were there.

Was it abandoned on the farm like a barn find sort of thing. How long had it been there..

  10. He was indeed in a rickety old barn, chickens were living in his cab. We think he was last used in 89. The LPG system had gone wrong which blew up the motor and that's where he stayed. The farmers son then decided to do him up but realised it was too much.
This picture is as he 1st saw the light of day.

So that is the task ahead. You are not all so jealous now are you?

We have to grind back all the surface rust and cut out all the stuff that is rotted through. the beauty of this one is, that apart from the obvious bits it is very solid and straight. the chassis is rock and the beams back and front are too. In a few month's the rot will be gone and the new panels ready to go on. The top hat ends are dead straight and complete. the bottom cargo floor which is the same profile as a combi is patch and difficult to get at. the load cargo floor is a different profile and difficult to find on the cheap. The sills are the same inner as late bays and the outers are similar to splitty sills and can be bought relatively cheaply from vwheritage or jk. We have a complete new cab floor, rear hatch. and cab door. We will have to repair two jacking points and a outrigger at some point, but they are not too bad at all.

Overall it is a tidy resto project and probably one I wish I had taken on before Rhubarb as Rhubarb was soo rotten it was disheartening at times.

Once the cleaning up is done we have to set about the replacement of panels etc. I am going to persevere with the welding this time and I will be buying the best mig I can in a few weeks time- In the meantime I have time to locate parts.

    We have to find..

    1 ns dropside with catches.

    2 sills inner and outer.

3 og cab steps both sides

    4 battery trays both sides.

    5 front drivers seat.

6 heater control levers and cover for dash.

    Let the journey begin!

A chap has to have an hobby.

I am not doing all of this in one go. The kids are determined to do an awful lot themselves. I will tool them up and show them what to do. They have amazing determination. I have learned a lot from doing my Westy and will guide them. I will also enjoy getting stuck in when they allow it. Hopefully this one will crack my aversion to welding and I can sort Rhubarbs ' odd bits ' afterwards.

If you knew how much I love restoring things - houses, vans, clocks, furniture .... You would see how excited I get when I have something like this challenging me.. I think Cam and Neil are the same.
