Yes we are very lucky to have been able to make this opportunity for our family - we have had to pivot and make lots of sacrifices and changes to our daily routines / finances to take this time - our rationale was our daughter will be in school soon so it’s now or wait another 16 years to do something like this again. We love it but it’s not all plain sailing.

2. Excellent adventure and well done for coping with everything the big wide world threw at you , it's something that so many people dream of but the reality of actually heading off and hitting the road for a few months / years is a challenge few are willing to even try ...

Chapeau sir , an adventurous few months

Easier the younger you are to a point. When I had no ties I spent a few months in Greece and Egypt, I set off with a spare pair of shreddies, a spare T-shirt and a pair of shorts. I just bought clothes if I needed and found fruit picking work to stay an extra month. I had an open return ticket on the Magic Bus so as long as I was happy to starve for a few days on the way home I had nothing to loose. I was renting so I abandoned my flat and dumped my stereo back with the parents. Too easy!

Later in life it was mortgage, kids, wife, business with 5-7 day turn round contracts etc - impossible without fecking up everything I'd worked hard for. Could have said sod it, we'll be alright but at that point even the house had devalued since we'd bought it. Now I'm relatively free again I just CBA.

The sad fact is that’s just an excuse. Nothing is stopping any of us doing anything apart from ourselves. I take inspiration from threads this this and people like MR SAM HODSON
theBusmonkey and Mrs Busmonkey

I use that excuse every single day and think one day….

Would you dare to risk loosing all you've "built" and start again, that's the question. I believe you're self employed with regular customers? Do you think they'd still be there when you got back? Maybe they would, but is it a risk worth taking?
For me, my list of possible customers was incredibly short, like 3 or 4 - they were gained from recommendations and I'd have certainly lost the lot so I would have to also change careers and I was earning WAY above my paygrade. OK I could still have chucked it in, but we'd have suffered a 80% pay cut when I got back.
Everyone's circumstances are different, mine was built on "can do" bullMarmite. :)

I don’t know Steve. If you decide to give up and go on travels then you’re not concerned about the customers. I’d guess most people do it because ‘something needs to change’ or want to do something different.

Brave people

I’ve got kids in school so I won’t do anything for 8-10 years and then who knows.
