Drivers side wing mirror... Loose... Driving me up the wall!

  1. Hi. Any suggestions on how I can stop my drivers side wing mirror from moving when I'm driving? Even after a few minutes I get a great view of the road surface and not much else. It also seems to come off very easily. Do I need a new one? Any advice would be great.

  2. Have you tried tightening the not that bolt the mirror stem to the door?

  3. Jesus the spell checker had a field day on that one. I meant to say tighten the nut that fixes it to the door.

  4. You should have a lock nut on it. screw the main shaft in as far as it goes, adjust then tighten up the outer lock nut. Have you got the plastic washer between mirror and body? If not you can make one from a plastic milk bottle.

The other thing I can tell you is that some mirrors have longer screw-in shafts than others. My passenger side mirror and door (which is on the right as I've got LHD) have been damaged some time back so the captive nut in the door you screw into won't grip properly with the shorter shaft. I bought some new mirrors last year but had to revert back to the old longer shaft on the passenger side.
