it never ends just went under the too have a look as you do and I spotted that the 6 bolts holding the drive shaft to the gear box where all loose and one missing ive just tightened them all back up but there is still a bit of play in the shaft now the other side is ok have the bearings gone on the shaft could it be the gearbox if its the shaft do I have to replace both sides any help much apprecitated cheers kev
have you got serrated washers on the bolts. they should stop them coming loose. you can replace shafts one at a time. you should have some play sideways but not up and down.one of my new shaft bolts came loose just after I fitted it, probably down to grease but ok since.
theres no serrated washers on the bolts these shafts are the only thing on the van ive never touched thou
will I need to replace the whole shaft or can I just get this http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares...ntry_GB.htm?crumbStartPage=2&crumbStartRow=41
well there should be 3 spreader plates and each bolt should have said serrated washer on them and torqued correctly , you can get m8 serrated washers one on egay. your joint may well be ok
What ihu said. I don't think its possible to wear out a drive shaft. They come loose because all of the engines power ( not much if you have a lawn mower like @snotty ) is transferred through the drive shafts. They've obviously been off before and whoever refitted them was too stupid to put them back on properly. If you're driving one of them pro conversion fandangled scooby buses I'd check the engine mounts and engine to gearbox interface too if I were you
Funny thing vw parts shops....say no towasherz aslong u got plates on ......now i fitted with platez no washers....im taking em out and putting washers on now.....thelatbay has more tec exp put together than vw themselves....
Thing with mine thou is i know they havnt been touched in at least the last five years maybe longer tham that Ive now tightned them Up but theres still play Trip to gsf in morning
when I did my c.v. joints mate I replaced all the securing bolts nuts /washers ,were pennies from gfs, also remember /note if you replace the bolts the new ones may have a diff head on in so much you will need a diff tool to tighten them and remember >wise to recheck the tightness of same at 50/100 kms
There should be some play, so you dont necessarily have anything to worry about. Try running it now you have tightened up the bolts. If you hear a knocking noise then your CV joints need replacing.
CV joint will be fine ,there is supposed to be movement otherwise it will all lock up . GSF do Lobro /GKN joints which are OEM but they do not come with serrated washers which are critical .
I must admit i havnt noticed a problem untill i saw the nuts where loose One side doesnt move the other side moves and makes a bit of noise Im going nequay next week so just a bit worried about it Im going to jack it up and see whats what This is the only bit on my bus ive never looked at before
That's probably because your turning the diff in the gearbox , if you conserned take the CV joint off ,clean and inspect it , if the balls are blue or damaged then change it . They give loads of warning if knackered . Personally I'd buy the serrated washers ,new bolts and torque it up and keep an eye /ear on it
filter through the crap in my thread here http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/cv-joints-driveshafts.22117/ loads of info and you think yours are bad - look at what mine were like.....
