I've been working in the engine bay of my 75 crew cab recently.

It's just dawned on me that there is no firewall (or any other barrier) between the front of the engine and the big under load bed compartment where the fuel tank lives.

Looking at pics of other bays the fuel tank is just in front of the engine on a shelf and hidden from view by a firewall.

Should double (crew) cabs have a firewall ?

No obvious mounting holes but want to be sure i'm not missing something vital.

  2. The fuel tank in a crewcab sits further forward than a camper , it sits on the cargo floor
& it comes out from under the rear seat , not from the back when the engine is out.
There should be 2 removable fire walls about a foot back under the load bed behind the rear seat .
You can't fit a firewall in the usual place as the engine air intake vents are in the side of the truck near the tank .
    Hope that makes sense!!
Unfortunately I can't upload a pic to demonstrate!!

    Thanks for the reply.

    Very reassuring.

I do have the 2 panels behind and under the rear seat though they are a bit frilly with rust.

Nothing directly in front of the engine but with what you said about the air intakes - it makes sense.

  4. I managed to source 2 really good 2nd hand panels from Simon @ NOS VW , my originals went in the scrap pile !!!

  5. Thread reviver...
Got the back firewall but is is it just open between engine and tank?..
Makes it difficult to have a gas based fire suppressant if it's a big open space guessing it needs the air intake not having scoops like a bus..

Mine is - just a large open void between engine and fuel tank.

PS..It took some real effort to clean it out too. I think South Africa must have been missing a ton of earth.
