Door clips and bungs

  1. I'm starting to get round to getting the door cards retrimmed. I've taken a door card off and a couple of the clips are broken so I'm going to get some replacements. Some replacement packs come with bungs but there weren't any bungs in my door. Do I need the bungs and if so why?

I have a feeling there are two different sizes, small ones and big ones. I could be wrong but I have read that they are not compatible so just have a check before buying your door bungs- which you will definitely need!

Ps, I have a few odd clips knocking around if they are any use to you.

  4. Thanks for the offer poptop2. I have to buy a fair few tho as the sliding door and two seat backs need doing as they are screwed on at the mo.

  5. I think I'll buy the clips first and if I need the bungs I can get those after. They are quite expensive for what they are but I've found someone on eBay selling 50 for £7.49.

  6. PT2 is correct they differ in size.

  7. Thanks mick, I assume the bung makes up for the smaller clip. I'll get the 50 clips first and check the size with my hole and if needs be get the bungs.

  8. The clips alone'll damage your paint. Bungs were 6mm or 8mm - I think they only sell the 8mm jobs these days. Measure the holes in your doors.

  9. you need the bungs because without them water which gets past the scraper seals(which frankly is loads), drips down inside the door, creeps along the clips, and turns your door cards to mush.

  10. What everyone has said...there's no way you will be able to squish the larger bungs in if the holes are smaller, as the bungs available nowadays seem to be rigid plastic rather than the softer ones you used to be able to get- you would have to drill the holes bigger

  11. Right-sized bungs and clips work well on the door cards, but everything's got to be the right size, even if it means drilling holes out.

The poor man/woman's solution is to cover the hole with a couple of squares of duck tape with a slit cut in the middle. Push the clips straight into this - works well, and doesn't damage the paint. But, as BN1 says, doesn't necessarily stop water getting in.

  12. Thanks for all the replies and good advice. Message received and understood! I definitely will be using bungs and clips even if I have to enlarge the holes to save my new door cards.

  13. I you have small holes you will be able to get large bungs in but they will be so squished up there won't be room for the clips. Small bungs are available at JK part J12808.

  14. It's meant to be Early doors* = smaller holes, but my 76 needed all the holes drilling out.

  15. As with my 79 it's got small holes and the door pressings say 78.

Where I used to live "early doors" is when you go to the pictures in the afternoon.:D

  16. My 78 had 8mm holes from the factory, but a previous replacement door had 6mm.
