Door check strap

  1. Right guys, I've got a 79 camper and at some time in its life the drivers door has been changed to an earlier bays door. The only problem is that I can't find a door check strap that will fit. I brought one for a 79 and the bit that connect the the body is right but the bit that goes in the door flops around like a sloppy sausage. Any one come up against this problem before and how do you get round it?!? Cheers in advance

  2. You're right, there are two kinds of checkstrap, the slim later ones with rubber bumpers (quieter) or the early ones with a big spring. To fit a late strap to an early door, you'll need to make an adaptor plate to bridge the wider hole in an early door. Or...at a pinch, tack weld the late strap mounting tabs to the door frame (bit of a bodge, but works). The other alternative is to get an early strap (which'll bolt into the door) and evenly file/grind the end of the (vertical) arm down to about 8mm, so it fits the doorframe mounting point. This works pretty well - I had to do it as I had, like you, a late bay with a replacement door.

Only prob with the early straps is that they're bloody noisy.

  3. I have a later front on my van. I need a late strap. I have earlier doors in the garage do you want to swap one of your late straps for one of my early :)

  4. Thanks for the offer but I've just had her resprayed mate and there's flames down the side. Don't fancy matching that up lol

  5. Forget that reply. Does help if you actually read the words lol

  6. I changed my wording as it looked like I wanted to swap a door. Just the strap I had in mind :)

  7. That freaked me out big time. I'm gonna make an adaptor plate so ill have to keep it I'm afraid
