Door alignment and 2 stage catches - Correct settings

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Glenny500, Dec 16, 2017.

  1. A couple of my doors, mainly the rear one, on my 73 bay is not correctly aligned. Its proud one side and then flush the other, then when you slam it its flush on the side which is normally proud and too far in on the other side.

When these doors are on the first catch, are they supposed to be a little proud, so that when the 2nd catch is engaged, then go flush. side door works fine when you pull the handle up (which i learnt when someone showed me, after a month or so of slamming it shut )

Is this correct that the door should sit a little proud on the first catch and then flush at the 2nd ?

That would be correct.. second catch for safety if first catch pops,
first catch/flush is properly closed. If your door seal rubber permits..

  3. I am still struggling to get mine to stay closed only 50% of the time when I pull the handle up it latches closed as it should. However, when I start driving and hit a bump or something it clicks open which is a pain to say the least. I cannot seem to get it right.

You need to make sure both cables are correct from the front to back of the door, the solid bar one is the closer and the flexi Bowden one is the opener.

You can set it with too much tension in the opener so if the handle is slightly up it still has tension on the opener mechanism. A small bump handle twitches latch pops open.

There is also a pin in the lock mechanism that wears out on the closing part of the mech. It gets thinner as it gets older and causes worse slop and overlap of open and close operation.

I used a 3mm diameter marine clevis pin to replace mine and filed down its head to 5 mm diameter then cut it to length.

My sliding door opens and closes Ok but the handle points slightly up and the inside locking latch doesnt work unless you close it from outside - Devon cooker gets in the way.

In the end @davidoft only has to look at a door and it behaves..
