Just bought a copy of 'keeping your volks alive for idiots' and is says' DONT JUMP START YOUR FUEL INJECTED MODEL' it will fry your alternator. Shall I take heed of this advice or has anyone successfully done a jump start ok with a Fi setup? The book advises to carry a spare starter battery if you think the it is suspect. (more spares just in case!)
Not a problem jump starting FI, all you need is to make sure the ignition is switched off when connecting the jumper cables and after starting the vehicle with the flat battery let the engine run for 5 mins to let the battery voltages stabilise before disconnecting the cables. More modern vehicles you have to leave the jumper cables connected for 5 or more minutes (depends on manufacturer) to allow the ECU's to wake up if they have gone into sleep mode.
