Having committed to this Doka and ordered the panels, I'm in two minds as to whether to give the job to a pro or to buy a rollover jig and a welder and do it myself this Winter. What would you guys do? I'm not skilled but can weld, it's a rat look working vehicle anyway so I'm not worried about painting it after. I do now have a big enough garage but still no power so I'd have to do the welding outside, the cutting, painting and grinding can be done inside.
All depends on you ... Can you realistically spare the time ,will mrs tbr be thrilled? I have to do everything myself, that is just me....
I'd give it a go, nothing to lose but what are your fabricating skills like in case you need to improvise
I like the idea of trying. I have built dozens of race bikes but that's all precision stuff (and when I had a powered garage). I erring on the side of giving it a go. I've got all the kit bar a welder, any recommendations?
I've been a welder for 17 years, you'll always have to improvise. so good fabrication is key - along with good tools, cutting of panels and clean edges. however apart from burning it, there isn't much that cant be put right.
If it was timed with mine disappearing for its welding / respray, you could do it round here? i have a MIG and Stick welder
Time and commitment is the crucial thing - do you have them? Resto's always take longer than you think!
^^^ what they said, I did one in a mud field when it was snowing and blowing a gale.. and they were cows in the field ,they used the van as a scratching post.... don`t mention the pigs smelly creatures... I used to do up vans for this one customer ,he told me if he did a van for say 40 hours he would expect his normal weekly wage ,if he can get someone to do his van for 40 hours for less than his weekly wage ,then he would rather do his day job and let the faster mechanic do his stuff...
