Devon roof hassle

  1. Tried at last to put new inner rubber seal on roof, had help but cant get it to fit. Tried seal in all combinations but no good, looking at aluminium edge on roof panel it looks like the reason it leaked before was on the original one of the longer side edges is not level and square to outer rim. Will have to shave quite a bit off it to square it off. Not impressed as roof refurb is taking ages we had to remove pvc sheet which I just fitted incase that was distorting the shape.
The new seal from C & C looks a lot narrower than the old even though original was perished. Do these seals only cover each metal lip by less than 10mm..:mad:

There are a few different design fails describable as Devon pooptops, as I sit here in my bus under a Devon pooptop your description does not match my pooptop.

  3. Will try more pics but seal is 20mm wide with about 8mm on each edge. Looks like I will have to make inner to outer gap measure equal as at minute have 5+mm each end but gap varies on each side from +5mm to 2/3mm [IMG]

You need to put the seal in at one point and keep going, eventually the gap will even itself out

  5. yeah tried that but what i didnt explain is that gap is different where original aluminium roof has been badly cut. I didnt want to trim this side and make it too sloppy a fit and thus leaking again.
I pop riveted when originally roof was on van and had old seal fitted so hoping not to alter the shape of roof and strengthened. Do you think I may of altered curviture doing this as the middle roof appears to pull itself higher than outer rim and pulling seal off.

  6. Remenber doing this on mine and the gap looks all wrong but percy vere and it will come good, obviously it was on ok before you took it apart and has been like that for 30 or 40 years so shouldn't need cutting now. I think the outer frame flexs a bit but will go back into shape when its all back together ( it is a fiddly job though ). Another thing i found was when i sat it back on the van it sat all wrong with gaps between van and roof. One week later it had settled back down under its own weight and looked great

  7. will take pics tomorrow to show. Any tips on how to get fitted as our rubber has very little which fits onto inner and slides off all time. May look at use speed clamps to hold frames in position..
