Devon Pop Top seals

  1. Evening all, quick question for those who have restored Devon pop tops..

Could someone tell me what seals are used for the vent?

I ordered from poptopparts.co.uk but not sure if I've missed some off.. this is the list of seals I've got for it

Main seal from Ali skirt to main top sheet
J seal for ali skirt to fglass roof cap
U trim for over headlining clips
U trim strengthen one.. for edging the fglass roof cap
And what they had down as vent seal

Problem is it just looks like a shorter piece of j seal? Is that right as the old seal was totally shot and didn't resemble anything

Also on the outside of the vent tunnel there is a recess that looks like it should have a seal glued around it..

I've attached a shot to show the groove the vent seal should go in and where a seal maybe fits..

You're correct - use the J seal for the skylight funnel - it fits between the plastic window and aluminium funnel bit, its also takes ages to get it in, use a blunt edged trim tool or wide flat blade screwdriver.

I've been refurbing a devon roof this week, I'm fairly sure a seal was not fitted to the outside - not judging by the one I'm doing and a couple of others I've looked at.

Here's where I'm at with this customers roof, I'm fitting a JK roofcap aswell, but have added corner plates to reinforce the inner frame as there where stress cracks at the joins/rivets, and also added additional rivets from the roof topside into the frame.[IMG]

  5. Thanks for this mate, in using a jk one as well.. is it me or does the roof cap seem about an inch too big all round??

Seems the same as the one I have here, hence why I've used a load of spacers/packers to centralise the roofcap to mark and cut the hole for the skylight.

  7. Can you swap me a couple of pics to compare I'm going to give mine a bash prob Tues. I was tempted to get the JK funnel cap.. but if yours works it'll save 80 quid

  9. No meaning to be lazy but could you send a link mate? I've looked through a couple of hundred post and not sure how to find the work on your poptop

I might be able to get some pics... next week tho as they're on my other phone which needs a new screen,

I trimmed the back edge of the aluminium funnel and mounted it to the roofcap from underneath - the square roof light plinth on the roof cap is set too far back in my opinion by about 2cm, but that could be just the variance in build tolerance at Devon's precision engineering workshop!

Some of the extra distance between roofcap/original roof can be taken up with the flex within the original central roof piece - and bonding them together - I think I've got a gap of about - 15mm to fill - possibly with headliner, but I'll most likely find a rubber trim to go in there.

  11. Cheers Kruger ;) would mounting from the underneath create a water gap from the cap through? Surely from the top gives the run off? Or have I read it and got 36 from 4 + 3?!?

You're right, I filled and sealed it from underneath with a tube of PU windscreen sealant, and gave it a bit of build up to allow water to run away... I've still got it stuck under my fingernails
