Devon Pop Top Roof removal for repair

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by SeanOC, Apr 26, 2015.

  1. Hi Guys,
Getting ready to remove the Pop Top to repair the fibreglass where it's badly cracked and leaking.

Can anyone tell me how it is all held together before I start randomly removing nuts and supports?
I can see some nuts under the black rubber caps in the picture, are they what holds things together along with the struts?

  2. Yeah undo the nuts under the rubber grommets and the finer roof will lift off leaving the frame behind, a few of mine sheared off so I would soay plenty of penetrating fluid and take it nice and easy and u may get them all off. Not the end of the world if u don't cos when it's off u can glass some new ones in to it. Good luck

  6. Ditto...

  7. they all do after a while....the best way to fix the dip is to make a curved support for it. Don't be tempted to make a former out of ply, or bridge the gap between the roof and liner, because this will also bend.
Between the roof and the hardboard liner you have a gap of about 2 inches if i remember rightly....
When I did mine, I held a piece of timber up across the span of the roof and scribed off the shape (to get the proper curvature)
I took the template to a ring bender (Barnshaw Bending, near Manchester) and asked them to bend some box section steel to the same profile...cost all of £20!...I bonded it to the inside of the roof and glassed over it.....

If there's noone local and you fancy making your own, you could rent a conduit bender from a hire shop and DIY....

  8. I've got pics of how I repaired the broken studs as well if u need them as I'm pretty sure some will snap

    Many thanks
Does the roof come off easily after the nuts undone and how thick and wide was the box section steel please

Careful when you undo the struts, quite strong springs in there!

  11. You don't need to undo the struts to remove the top, the frame stays behind dude

Oh yeah of course, I took all the lot off mine for painting and new headlining.

  13. Post the pics please

Cleaned off the top layer of fiber glass with a belt sander/power file and then it to sand down under the plate.

Then used a hacksaw blade to cut under the disk

Driller out stud and welded new one in

  15. Looks like you did a bigger job than mine. Did you re-gel coat the whole top or just where cracked or damaged?

  16. Half went missing have edited it now, not hard to do

  17. Hi,
Just found your posts and hope you might be able to help me.

I've got a '72 Bay camper and have just bought a late Devon roof and am in the process of installing it. Can you give me any help about which bits go where? I've got a fair idea but need to know a few more details. I also need to know where the best place to buy the bellows is.

I live in Aylesbury - are any of you near me so that I could pop over to look at how your roof works? Otherwise a phone call and some pictures may be enough.

    thanks,
    Phil

  18. Hi Phil
I live in Tring & have a 1977 Devon pop-top called Cyril. PM me if you want to look at him some time he's normally under a cover but easily accessible. @Razzah lives in Hemel and has a also has a pop top but I'm unsure of the make...

  19. Hi Sean,
Thanks and sorry for the delay - been very busy!

I'd really appreciate coming over to see Cyril. I presume it's the roof where the mechanism is at the front and back mounted centrally with springs which compress down? I've just checked on your pics you loaded up and yes, it's the same as mine.

Could you let me have your address and number and I can then call you to arrange to come over. Really appreciate this.

    thanks,
    Phil

  20. @SeanOC just been going through this do you have any pics of the structure used? I have the fibre top but need to build a frame to strengthen it for the springs etc. Cheers
