Devon pop top help.

  1. After doing loads to my bus, and with loads more ongoing to meet a middle of July deadline for our first trip away. My pop top seems to have thrown a spanner in the works!

Sarah had the roof up and some wind caught it, the springs are weak and on the list for replacement. The net result is somehow ( I wasn't there ) the roof came crashing down.

This seems to have popped the supporting cross bars off where they meet the outer frame.

Cross bracing bars in this picture borrowed from tinterwebs [IMG]

Now I have neither the time or finance to rebuild the roof properly just now, but really need to get some rigidity back in the roof as the cross bracing bars are clearly free floating and being held up by the headlining inside the van now.

Is it possible to remove the head lining support the centre of the roof and re rivet the cross bracing bars from the inside as a temporary measure?

  2. are you talking about the support bars ? what year is your bus ? are they on the sides or end ? is that pic yours , its a bit small ?

  3. The pic is a pic I found on the net...... it is small but all I could find.

My van is a 72, 73 model year.....

In that pic it appears to me the roof is upside down...... on my roof the bars running left to right in the picture appear to have become disconnected from the outer frame and are now suspended on the inside of the headlining...... the roof is bowing in when looking at the van from the top and would likely hold a fair quantity of water if it rained....... so I need to do something about it.....

  4. Flakey

    Flakey Supporter

Need pics of yours really if poss

  5. have you removed the head lining ? if the cross members under it have come away , yeh what flakey says better to see what you have ??

  6. Will be tomorrow now.....before I can take detailed ones but these are some I have on file.

The dark lines running left to right are the loose bars hanging on the headlining.

The bars following the roof having its uncontrolled collapse have now pierced the head lining at their ends....

  7. It's the same van honest...... just a few months between shots and lots of work...

  8. mmm well def need to take head lining off to see whats going on if they have come adrift you might be able to use some silkaflex to fix them back to roof if you dont want to use fixings thru , its bludee strong stuff i used to stick my keels on my boat with it for beaching at 15 / 20 knots and my roof cap has it under it .

  9. are nother pic , are the four corner plates that are riveted ok ? put some more pics up tomorrow of the prob .

  10. looks ok their

  11. Corner plates that the spring riser bars attach to?

  12. yep

  13. It rises fine...... It's the centre section held in with the two piece rubber seal that is sagging and that the metal support bars seem to have come adrift from.

The riser springs are lazy though and take very little persuasion to sag.

  14. Totally solid.

  15. where are you bud ?

  16. West Midlands

  17. on the tubes are the grub screws in ?
