Devon or not devon, a much confused man!

  1. Hi all,
So here i am with a 75 baywindow that was originally a west german army panel van. The roof had 4 x gas struts originally, going from the centre of the fibre glass roof to the edge of the frame attached to roof. Im trying to research how it would of looked originally and if i can scoure the parts. Another option was maybe a side hinge dormobile top, but again would it fit, is there any where i can find dimensions for the various roofs fitted?

All help and advice greatly appreciated as im bored of the two bits of wood currently keeping it up

    Pete

  2. I don't think that is a devon roof cap but I am unable to offer anything else.
A devon uses a spring loaded mechanism at either end to raise the roof then 4 thin metal straps lock to keep it raised but is supported largely by the spring mech, hope this helps

  3. Cheers mate,
Yeah ive seen the mech for the devon, i think the bottom frame is correct but like you im not conviced on the fibreglass roof

  4. Doesn't look like a Devon roof to me. Looks ok, though, if you can fix it.

  5. The middle groves-on the outside- could be used for making larger ice pop or ice signboards . Would be interesting to know what there for?

  6. Those rigid grooves probably make a nice rigid roof, although water trap ? hence the dirt ? never seen one like it though, Probably get some struts from SGS

Know nothing about your roof except to say if you can't fix it and go for Dormobiles (makes a nice space inside with good light) you might want to get stainless hinges, and also leave a gap in the right place so water runs off properly ...
Did your 75 come with a pre-72 front bumper or did you switch em out?

  8. Yeah ive had sgs struts but they are that good, the mounting plate came out of the roof when i tries to close it lol. They were only rivited in. The van was converted to a low light by the bloke who had it before me, i bought it as a empty but solid shell. The roof is the last part of the restoration. I quite fancy the idea of a dormobile to be honest, just finding one at a decent price
