Devon Moonraker Side Hinged Full Roof

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by keithandtrudystype2, Jun 18, 2012.

  1. Just having a good look at the mountings onto the roof of our bus, just wondering how the sliding struts fix in to the roof, can the bracket that fastens to the roof be removed and replaced in situ without removing the headlining inside? If anyone has a photo or sketch it would be good.

    Thanks

Can't remember the details, but I've changed the struts on one of these without disturbing the headlining. Not sure about the bracket itself. Try taking a screw out and see what happens - if it's threaded and rises up as you unscrew there must be a captive nut. If it loosens then turns without coming out, a nut is spinning on the end and not captive.

  3. Cheers Zed, Appreciate the comments, not sure I want to try loosening the fixings especially where the headlining is at the front, its the only smart thing about our bus and if the nut drops off and I have to rip the headlining off, I will be in serious brown stuff with Trudy. Looks like someone has sealed the fixings with silicone sealer as well so it probably has leaked before. They seem quite secure just a bit worried seeing as our 13 year old daughter sleeps up top, I get paronoid if the roof blew closed on her, mind, it was that wild last year in Cornwall and there were no issues. I might look at replacing the struts, i take it they work with each other to lock the roof in position when open.

To remove the roof do you know how hard a job it is, just thinking of future jobs to do...(after sorting all the bodywork and other jobs!)

    Cheers

A brief glance and removing the roof looked quite a job. I hope we're talking about the same roof - full length, side hinge, criss-crossed struts outside either end? They don't lock, but the roof was very heavy to lift before the struts were replaced and sprang up with no effort after - well worth it.

  5. Yes thats the roof, we need new struts! It does take some lifting.
