Devon bunks

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by the 3 crispies, Mar 18, 2023.

  1. Trying to sort all old parts I removed years ago, first pic (rear ?) I have lost or mislaid but am I missing anything other than canvas?. As there was I think u shaped bracket x 2 on the front?.
I have old pvc covers which I believe proud to pop stock new and were these screwed or riveted in place?

Yes the main fabric ( on mine it was a cotton canvas long gone brittle ) was wrapped round the poles and the thin flat bars. The flat bars were then riveted to the sides of the bus.

The PVC covers were also trapped under the metal bars before riveting.

There should be two support brackets at the front , one at the rear to hang the ends of the "gas pipe" off..

To make it removable, I ended up putting lacing eyes on the side of the bus and using eyelets and cord to hold the bunk fabric on , now a heavy polyester cloth.

    I shall take some pictures..

I still have the original material on mine. Holds my weight ok. But it’s just too short.

On mine it had rusted between the bar and the side of the bus in places and the rust had affected the original fabric.

I was able to sew my bunk fabric up to be as long as possible. That's one reason its removable in my setup, the fabric is longer than the original bars.

The only problem is some git put the trunking for the poptop lighting and solar cell cables right beside my hip.

I also beefed up the over centre latches after the front two popped open on the M4.. lane 3 at 60mph going into a gale... .. theres extra bolts through the poptop too to take the pull down force further inboard and the hooks on the poptop are thicker steel.

I was going fast enough to overtake a truck that was overtaking a truck , and my bus had lost speed because of the gale ..

On the flat on the M4 . In still air , flat road, with everything right, it will sit at 65-68 GPS MPH for long distances without getting too hot. Go any faster and the cylinder head and oil temperatures start to rise.

  11. Front of flat bar using existing holes are 15mm out from front and do the fixed part of the popper not go through flat bar/material too ?.
    Thanks [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

The cover goes under the fixed bar, the poppers I think were fixed in place by the fixing rivets.
Look at my third picture, the eyelet is screwed in at the same height as the metal bar, trapping the cover.

(Screwing things into that metal was a bit nasty where it had corroded behind the sheet metal as it would grip the self tappers and they would shear off.)

This is Devon! Try the bar the other way round and also on the other side. A carpenter with a power drill and a concept of an approximate fitting was let loose on metalwork...

  13. Thanks Mike understood about trapping covers under bar but our poppers are not in line, so before I get some remade is this incorrect and/or they should have poppers on the fixing points. Going to riv nut ours M5 whilst at this stage too.

I like the rivnut idea .. my screws are effectively M3, but M5 is like the first strong size.
