Devon bunk rivets?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by CandyCamper, Jun 13, 2016.

  1. Does anyone know what size the rivets are that affix the Devon bunks to the van sides?

Mine was screwed on with 1x12s self tapping screws!

  3. I was in hope of maintaining the factory approach......

Pretty sure mine were, think there's 2 different types of rail, are yours round or flat ?

Yep, mine were like that too, with nylon spacers between the pole and the van.

  6. It's a flat bar on mine with the fabric looped around, it also pins the vinyl cover on....approx 10 large rivets.....

Then two large screws at each end hold on the mechanism to the walls.

    About 5mm

That's very smart star-pattern vinyl headlining you've got there - is it the original or have you found the holy grail of new stock?

  10. Ha. It is the original full of holes from bunk rivets and screws! I find it strange that Devon did not match the headlining with the perforated stuff in the cab and rear!

I know what you mean - I expect they had gigantic roll of the stuff from the early 60s that they were determined to use up.

  12. Bunks done, m4 rivet nuts did the job, much more secure than relying on a single thread of sheet metal holding a self tapper and it makes the bunks easy to remove for repair / refurb.

Modelled by our daughter - who has with the advent of useable bunks finally become interested in the van...

What's holding that middle hanging bracket on though?

  14. Haven't looked behind it..... I'm guessing sheet steel. However following drilling out the original rivets that held the bunks on the holes in the side of the van were uneven in size. Which left us with the choice of going up a hole size and sourcing the correct size screw/bolts and it still being held on a single thread. Or use the rivet nuts which eat up the slight variation in hole size and give us 6-7 threads at each screw. Seemed like a good plan to me.

I agree but if you're worried that middle bracket looks like it's held on with 2 rivets and its meant to hold 2 bunks!

  16. Just looked it's two massive screws..... not sure what's behind them though. May well get the rivet nut treatment.

It's probably quite a decent strengthening bar, certainly thicker than the factory one further back
