Detailed Westy LPG tank fill needed

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by AndyC, Apr 30, 2015.

  1. I've just tried to fill my Westy LPG tank for the first time and failed miserably!

I was already bricking it, as the thought of an explosion didn't sound like fun.

I've read a few how to guides, and they all looked so simple!

So I turned the tap off.
    Opened the little bleed valve.
    Fitted the screw-->bayonet adaptor.

Then I tried to attach the nozzle.
Couldn't really work out how it went on.
Do you just push it on?
Push it on and turn it?
Do I push the lever towards to me or away.

I got to a point where gas started to come out of the valve, so I stopped.
    Went in to pay.
Turns out I owed them nothing! Wow, freebie I thought!
Got home, turned stove on to test, one hiss then nothing.

So needless to say, no, I haven't filled up with LPG!

So, how the ruddy hell do I do it?!
As detailed as possible please, as I am a plonker! :)

  2. Having read some more guides (for LPG cars) and seen some videos, it appears I need to.

    1) Push nozzle onto fitting
    2) Turn 90 degrees to the right
    3) Pull lever towards the hose
    4) Press a button on the machine to start it

I didn't realise point 4 at all. I could have been there all night really!

  3. Aha you figured it out, I read your first post earlier and was gonna say did you push, and as i remember hold, the button!!

  4. Back I go to fill it up then!

Not to the same place though.

The embarrassment would be too much!

  5. Haha my bus runs on lpg ... Yep stand and push the button. Disconnect and carefull of the woosh bit. That gets me everytime . ....

  6. Is it normal for gas to come out of the bleed valve when filling? When do I stop? When liquid comes out of it?

  7. Yes, when liquid comes out. However I did some maths from the size if it and reading on is forums and you should get approx 8 litres in, so stop before that and you know you're goid

Yeah, @AndyC , not too good a look with gas billowing out of the outage valve.
Don't crack it too far open as one forecourt attendant did on ours in the States. The incoming liquid blew the tiny valve out as it boiled and the bus and surrounding area was enveloped in a cloud of gas. They have separate areas in the gas stations in the US for filling tanks as its a bit tricky to contain when it goes wrong

@pkrboo 's suggestion is the best advice. Stop at 8l & screw in the bleed valve. Wear leather work gloves as the boiling point of propane can be below freezing as it exits the valve.

Make sure there's no idiot smoking in a car near you;):D

  9. So leave the bleed valve closed and stop at 8L?
Or does the bleed valve need to be open to allow the liquid to flow?

  10. Open the valve !!!

Its like filling up an LPG gas bottle on a Fork Lift, the spray will become larger when the bottle is full, never think you can squeeze that bit more in as they go up like bomb.

    Serious shizzle.

  11. yeah OPEN the valve whilst filling, the aor inside the tank needs to go somewhere and it is pushed out by the gas going in!!

its 2.4 US gallons = 9.08 litres so 80% of that is 7.264 litres. that is if 2.4 gallons is the 100% amount. basically if you go to 7 litres you should be fine

  12. Top stuff. So the air rushing out is normal? I think it's that that made me worried. Haha.

  13. I have the under slung tank;) and want to know we're to get that adapter anyone thanks

  14. That's interesting. I have never opened the bleed valve of ours and have got nine litres in from empty perfectly happily. I haven't exploded yet either (so far)

  15. Did it!

    Easy when you know how.

Put 7L in when liquid started coming out.

Must remember to get some gloves for turning the valve off, as I had to use my sleeve!

Couldn't start bus after. Typical. Turned out fuse 11 had blown (for some reason) whilst driving and wouldn't start without it!

  16. Bloody hell what a pain to fill... For my 70ltr lpg tank it's just plug and play.
