Dells + stock throttle cable

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by snotty, Feb 7, 2017.

  1. Anyone using the stock throttle cable with their Dellortos? Any problems? Mine's less than optimal.

Late late accelerator pedal (the one that works, with two cable holes), CSP centre mount linkage.

  2. Which bit is bugging you. Mine wouldnt work through the correct hole and ended up popping it through the tinware through the captive nut for mounting the servo cross tube! At least i think thats what its for!

Think the solution is to swap the carbs over so the actuating arms are at the hatch end rather than the firewall side and fit a bracket for the bell cranc linkage. ive seen it done as @zedders did it . Nice n at job too. Looked far better and i think the cable can come through the hole intended for it. That said im not entirely sure he used astandard cable or not. Need to find the thread!

If its none of the above then wats the issue?

  3. Type 1 or Type 4? I have hex-bar on mine with a standard cable ('72 model with crappy pedal + linkage arrangement).

    It works OK.

    EggBoxes and nicktuft like this.
  4. Your just showing off with your CU engine and two dipsticks. ......looks nice!

  5. One's a dummy - no leaky bellows for me ;)

@snotty - should have said, I fitted a stand off piece on the L/H carb to straighten up the drop link, much better

I used to run my dells on the standard cable no probs. It was the cabley type, rather than the single strand type though.

  8. That's what I want to hear. Type 1, I assume. What linkage did you have? I've got more faffing to do...it's almost there. At the mo, if you adjust it open the throttles fully, they don't return fully to idle. Just wanted to know if it was futile.

Did you use any extra return springs?

  9. Well why didnt you say type 1 then you numpty git!

  10. You didn't ask, did ya ;)?

  11. Now im aware you have an inferior engine unit I shall avoid your techinickle postage! I spit at your type 1 peh!

Yes type 1. I had a CB hex bar linkage and manifolds. From memory, the cable did exit the fan shroud at a sharper angle than I would have liked, but it worked fine for the couple of years it was on there. I don't recall having to add an extra spring, although I have had to on other setups before now.

  13. The CSP is actually better cable-wise, as the cable anchor's almost in the same position as the stock Solex...but not quite...

Yep, the CSP are a better linkage. I had a pick up in the other day that required an extra spring on a CSP, so I made up a bracket that bolted on to one of the fuel pump fixing bolts, and then used a standard Solex carb spring from that to the cable clamp which seemed to work well.

  15. I have a late 72 with T1 1956cc running twin 40DCNFs on Berg manifolds and a CSP centre swivel linkage. I was happy to not get full throttle using a standard cable because the carb venturis are only 30mm so I reasoned 75% throttle opening was enough on 40mm Carbs (I know, bit gash but I'm not a speed merchant at least not in the bus).
Then I had it tuned on a rolling road and they modified the linkage without asking me, extending the arm at the front under the floor with a bit of metal and a couple of small bolts to get a longer pull. Doubled my bill grrr!
I was a bit concerned about the angle the cable took going into the guide tube but it has turned out to be fine. Still never use full throttle though, doesn't make much difference so maybe my 75% theory was correct!
