Dellorto 40 DRLA questions

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grub, Jun 24, 2015.

  1. Hi all,

    I have a 1776 with dell 40 DRLA's. No chokes

All drives fine when warm, but couple of small niggles when started from cold..

    (1) Ticks over really slowly when first started and you have to rev it a bit for the first minute or so otherwise it cuts out from ticking over too slow - after a few mins it ticks over at a few hundred revs - when it's warm, it's fine (900-1000 rpm)

    (2) Again, just when cold it hesitates a little and sometimes backfires when driving it under load (e.g. pulling up a hill) - again fine when warm.

Can anyone advise if this is an easy fix I can do myself & what/where to adjust, or do I just have to live with this as there are no chokes.

    Many thanks

  2. You describe the pitfalls of dells. Warm your engine before setting off and put up with it unless its really bad. Mine does all of the above but not for that long! Mine ticks over reasonably well from cold but it is a little slow when cold and a little high when warm. That said ive got leccy ignition and keep the plugs and the rest of the ignition system tip top. The backfiring under load - difficult to say whether that's a carb or engine thing really, depends how bad and could be fuel starvation but unlikely if its ok when warm. I say check the ignition components. change owt that's due and clean and check everything else.

  3. just get in it and drive , driving will warm the engine up quicker than leaving it on tick over

a session on a rolling road will make sure everything is as good as it can be and you might gain a little MPG at the same time

  4. try re syncronizing your linkage when the engine is hot.....

  5. you can re-install the choke mechanisms, may take a work around as originally they were cable operated ..

  6. thanks guys

  7. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

True. I have my tickover at 950 hot.
It's starts easy though and I hold the revs at about 1,000 for maybe 5-10 seconds and they rise up to about 1500 then over maybe 2-3 seconds. After that it ticks over at about 650, but I drive off then, really only a minute later and it's ticking over fine.

  8. Just checked the plugs & they are quite sooted up round the edge, although the electrodes are white.

Also, when you start it from hot, you have to turn it over for a few seconds before it will start then rev it to 'clear it's throat' - does it sound like the bus is running too rich or too lean and which way do I turn the mixture screws to rectify this.

Any advice would be greatly received as I am doing a prom tonight and don't want the bus vreaking down!

    thanks
