Dead bus

  1. Hi all, had used my bus Wed/Thurs to go to work which is a round trip each day of about 20 miles and she was running sweet just as she has done every time I've used her. Backed her off the drive this morning, slight misfire initially but within a few seconds was running fine. Went to start her this evening to put back on the drive and she won't start. Turns over fine, strong smell of petrol after turning her over for about a minute but she will not fire. Can't see anything amiss, all connections look ok but not even an attempt at firing. She is fitted with Pertronix electronic ignition in an 009 dizzie, plugs all checked recently, leads, rotor arm and dizzie cap all recently replaced. Any help appreciated.

    Cheers, TA

  2. I'm no expert but if you can smell petrol it's leaking somewhere and you need to find it.

Coil or pertronix might have failed, take a plug out and see if it's sparking

The petrol smell could be you've flooded it turning it over for a minute.

  5. I'd guess it's flooded now hence the smell of fuel. No spark. Have u got 12v at the coil?

  6. Thanks guys, she normally starts first turn of the key so yes it may have flooded but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the reason she wouldn't start - just a side effect of it. By the way petrol smell was coming from carb which would indicate flooding.

  7. Thanks, where do I need to check for 12v?

  8. See if there is 12v at the coil with the ignition on first.

  9. coil ,snap

  10. Check across the spade terminals?

    Thanks

  11. Ah have u got one of those screwdriver type things that lights up? Invaluable!

  12. I've found that a strobe gun triggered from each lead in turn is the fastest way of confirming the HT side is fine.

If all is well, there's no need to check anything else electrical other than the timing.

  13. Yes I do have one of those, put it across the two spade connector terminals?

  14. Plus and minus to the battery, and the clamp over each HT lead in turn.

  15. One of which? No not across both terminals! On the + one. Red wire?

There's a good chance there's damp in the ignition system, try a spray with wd40 on the leads, distributor cap and inside it, leave it 10 mins and if it starts it was just damp, it sounds to me as if it's not firing and the fuel smell us due to flooding

  17. WHS ^^^

Take the dizzy cap off and see condensation ???

  18. And she started first turn of the key this morning after 2 days out on the kerb:)

  19. And wouldn't start again this morning but did tonight again first turn of the key. It was very damp here this morning - could this be the problem?

    Thanks

Yes as mentioned above damp is almost certainly the issue
