Dashboard lights.

  1. Hi guys,

Possibly a stupid question but can someone tell me if the speedo and petrol gauge have lights behind them? My oil temp light works but as you've guessed by now - the speedo and petrol gauges don't...

The few images and write ups I've seen and read are inconclusive (to me anyway) so I'm looking for confirmation either way please.

If there are lights, are they all independently powered or are they daisychained and it's possible that the bulbs have gone?

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

  2. Yes they have lights and they are daisy chained from the light switch could be bulbs or power from the switch.

  3. Yes they do. Have you tried turning the headlight switch knob ;)?

PS The oil light is for oil pressure, not temperature.

  4. Lol yes they dim as well good thinking @snotty

  6. Here's a pic of mine think there's 8 bulbs over all, I would order the holders as well in case some have worn away[IMG]

Can they and the holders, be swopped out for coloured LED ones?
    Just asking...

  8. Hmm not sure how that would play out, I know you can use clear/white led equivalents but just make sure there compatible

  9. Hiya,
The oil temp gauge on the right has a back-light which works and dims when I turn the light switch.

All the warning lights work, it's just the speedo and petrol gauge back-lights that don't.

This may help when it comes to putting the instrument panel.

Refitting the instrument panel clips was made easier thanks to @BayCreamPuff over on the samba

They are spring clips. It's pretty easy and definitely doesn't require sticking your hand up under the dash.

Pull out the instrument panel. Attach the clips with the rounded part pointed up on the top and down on the bottom. you can leave the bottom ones a tiny bit loose.

Push instrument panel back into the hole on the dash. It will snap right into place. Tighten the bottom screws.

  11. May have become disconnected, or the bulbs may have blown. Take the instrument pod out and have a look! Unscrew the speedo cable and release the cliis.

My VDO oil temp gauge has a much brighter backlight than the other instrument backlights , probably the green filter on the other lights having an effect as below with the LEDs.

The old bulbs have probably blackened with use until they are very dim.

When it comes time to fit coloured LEDs because you might like to, remember that there is a green plastic dome over the backlight illumination bulbs inside the instruments, so some colour LEDs will come out very dim.

In the case of the ultra-cheap Chinese LEDs I have, they all have subtly different tints of "white" which come out as more or less greenish on the dials. So I had to swap them around instead of paying for a quality branded product.
