Damaged stud - oil strainer

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Starryboy, Jun 6, 2013.

  1. One of the studs around the cover to the oil strainer can't be tightened up. The PO obviously new cos he's put a bolt in, instead of the proper stud. (Which doesnt tighten up either) Oil keeps leaking from this bolt and its doing my swede in.

What can I do to get the proper stud to tighten up?

Should I try to tidy the existing thread or tap it out to the next size? Or anything else I haven't thought of!

    Cheers.

  2. If the thread is knackered no amount of tidying up will stop it leaking. As you say, go up to next size or helicoil it back to original size. If your feeling flush get the hole welded up and drill and tap back to original size. The weld will be harder than the original ali.

You can get repair studs for this - M8 one end, M6 the other. Try VWHeritage?

  4. Heritage used to sell repair studs that are the normal size down below, but next size up where it screws into the case. You drill & tap for the larger thread - fixed!

Stripped strainer studs are a common prob, so you're not alone...
