Should be easy but its driving me nuts, trying to replace the brake return spring on the bay, what a PITA. ive got the pinch bolt out no problem, but now trying to get the pedal off the shaft is driving me crackers... This should be easy but it aint... or is it ? I tried a puller but it just wont stay gripped to the minimal edge on the pedal, so gave up.. I don't want to resort to a drift and hammer, there isn't enough room to take a decent hammer swing anyway.... So what solutions have you chaps come up with to remove the pedal from the shaft, any special tools, home made implements, devices, technique? all sensible suggestions will be considered
I gave up and will ask garage to do mine when I take it for the MOT! It does not help you but I couldnt get a puller on it and beating it didn't seem to work either!
Its a bit of a pain, might try the air chisel idea, a wee drift in the end and plenty vibrating action might just shift it ...
I've done mine twice, the second time while we were on holiday in Kent last year. Make sure the pinch bolt is out far enough to clear the groove. Putting it back in I used a loop of strong cord to pull the spring round to hook it on. The first time probably took me three hours, the second about one.
Sheesh I have the same issue a broken spring - was just going to make up a bit to put over the broken bit and try to wind it back up a bit to give it tension again? Looking at the pedal cluster and as you say minimal space to work with and my back !! Ones of those clever little design moments VW engineers excell in!
The pinch bolt is clear, in fact its in a box on the work bench Ive pried, levered, tapped, soaked, fiddled with pullers and finaly despaired, Im going for the air chisel idea at the weekend, not sure if I will use it to vibrate out the pivot pin or cut the bloody van up....
