daft oil question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by bood, Jan 15, 2015.

  1. I have done a search and can't find much.

What oil do people recommend for a 1700 type 4. It's not getting much use and only does very few motorway trips.

    Thanks

  2. No question is daft dont worry, the answers might be! You can use any oil , people get so hot under the collar about oil! I use boggo multigrade semisynthetic 5W30 because Costco sell it in massive drums for good money and you will end up throwing it out every 3000 miles anyway ! Just dont ever use Mobil1 or anything like that!

I use my all year round and do lots of motorway driving.

  3. 20/50 halfords classic here .opps sorry im type 1 as you were:oops:

rickyrooo1 Hanging round like a bad smell

10/40 semi synth and a packet of popcorn

  5. I use 15/40 multigrade. You may get some weird replies to this one, it's a running joke on here.
By the way what sort of anti-freeze do you use?:D

  6. Ok chaps thank you very much. :D

  7. It depends on whether you want to deep fry it like say a Scottish Mars Bar for which you'll need proper chip fat or just lightly crisp the edges in which case I'd use a sesame. :)

  8. I have 10/40 at the minute and 20/50 before that. Think I will go back to 20/50 next tune. Although I some some 5/50 in halfords the other day....

The trick is the cooling system adjusts the viscosity of the oil you put in to about the same regardless of grade across the usual range of basic oils , by running a bit hotter or colder at the point when pressure relief valves make the oil begin to go through the oil cooler.
So its down to worrying about suitability for the tappets and cam.. if you read the Samba they worry about zinc content as a result.

But actually changing it and not thrashing the engine is probably more important.

    What the man said:thumbsup:

    My Moto,

Oil is cheap..................engines expensive............drive it like you want it to last 100,000 miles.

Good old Castrol GTX 20/50 is no longer available, its now called Castrol XXL 20/50 and probably costs more as its designed for Classic cars.
    Its what I use.

  11. I use a mineral 20/50 (as recommended in handbook) in a type4 2.0 and change every spring after about 1500 miles, seems to run better than sae 30.

  19. Well, I shop at Waitrose, and on my other filler cap it says BMW recommend Castrol, so for some one like me who arbeited and was macht frei , from BMW, then that's good enough for me!
