Cynical insurance company.

  1. Having sold the Sick Bay I rang the insurers to get a refund on my remaining insurance only to be told that I don't qualify because I have had the policy for longer than 90 days. Apparently it's in the small print somewhere. Not the end of the world but just another cynical little ploy to squeeze every drop by the company. ( Adrian Flux but I guess they all do it).

Have you looked at the small print to see if what they say is correct . I ask because i had travel insurance for the whole family and as we were going out of the country for more than 30 days they stated my kids were not covered for the trip, thet quoted an extra £400 for them to be covered ,i asked where it stated the kids wouldnt be covered for such a trip and asked for copies of the relevant conditions . They phoned back in ten minutes and said they made a mistake ....
I would look for the small print ,or ask them to give you the exact condition they claim exists .
I am aware that with historic vehicles with flux you dont build up any no clams discount.

Reminds me of when I asked the bank manager how/when they took their fee on an investment mortgage he said all of my payments for the first 2 years would be fees.

There was a breakdown of my classic insurance on a bill once and out of about £120, only £35 was for the actual insurance.

I had a quote from Direct line of just over £1150 for my Golf (including full breakdown cover).
I must admit I do suffer from buyer's inersia so it's my own fault.

This year i took the opportunity to gGoCompare and what a surprise - it was much cheaper.

In an even bigger shock :) Direct Line were able to magically reduce the cost without compromising my cover - weird that!

    Sounds very typical Adrian Flux.
I have had refunds in the past on part of my premium from other insurance companies. AF are meant to be one of the worst for finding ways to charge for extras or not pay out refunds.

  7. Double check everything yourself., if you can.

I had Commercial Insurance for a van through HSBC. When I broke down I answered all questions over the phone honestly. It was 23:00 and they refused to collect me because my van had signage on it.
I assumed I was an idiot for not knowing this detail and paid £300 for private recovery.

Years later when HSBC screwed me again (it’s several times so I wrote them a 50 page document about all the occurrences over the decades) it got me thinking about that “signage”. Not once was the term used in any of their literature. Why would it be an issue with Commercial Insurance.

  8. Thanks for your comments - I will double check. However they did say this was 'one of the reasons I got it so cheap'.

If it was a classic policy it’s not unusual, if the amount you’re due is small there’s an admin fee plus cancellation costs which can be more
Expensive than the remainder of the policy

That is fair comment , tied in with other comments about commission, i paid £130 for my van fully comp, if you were to take away commission and charges theres not much left to be returned. Even so even if its a fiver its better in my pocket than theirs .

When I sold my bus I had about 3 months of AF insurance left, the policy was cheap enough, but when I called to cancel it, they said the cancellation premium and fee was actually higher than any refund due, but they would waive the charge as I'd been with them for several years....
