Cylinder head

  1. Hi, my van T2 with type 4 2.0 CJ engine has been running on 3 cylinders, did a compression check its pulling nothing on no 2, so I've took the engine out and e examined the head, no 2 exhaust valve was sitting proud so dismantled the valve and valve seat fell out with valve, valve seat does not fit in the hole.
So just weighing up my options can I get it repaired or do I just buy a new one.
Looking at the normal vw retailers they dont sell the exact head as mine which has 33mm exhaust with 37.5 inlet, they sell them with same exhaust but 39.5 inlet, what I want to know is can I replace my damaged head with this one and have the original on cylinders 3+4, or would have to buy 2 new ones the same?

  2. Where abouts are you.. Headworks in Warrington fitted new seats for me when they skimmed a head I dropped and dented (seats fell out when it hit the floor after baking it to fit guides)... not a good day...
... and I'd guess yes both heads need same valves on both sides to balance running

There is a feeling over on the Samba that once a valve seat falls out of a T4 head it will never remain put for long if pushed back in.
Because the aluminium round the seat has changed enough through heat cycling to let it fall out, and at some point the seat may have tilted and pushed away the metal of the head.
So instead of being an interference fit from top to bottom of the seat hole, it will only be held in by the peening over at the surface of the head. A bit of vibration and heat and it will start rattling around again.
Unless the head is welded and re-machined to fit the valve seat properly, you will be safer with an inexactly matched valve sizes new head. The difference in area of the two valve seats is less than 10% if you compare the inner diameters of the valve seats.. not a lot.
I would be more worried that the head CC and therefore compression ratio is reasonably matched from side to side.
