Cutting out when idle...

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Louise, Dec 1, 2019.

  1. Bertie has never missed a beat since owning him in April. However on a recent trip to Cornwall - he had issues. When pulling up to a junction, roundabout, traffic lights... he cut out. Very embarrassing!

I don't know if it's related but I unhooked the battery & leisure battery to attempt welding his side panel. I've hooked everything back up (& failed at the welding) but could that have something to do with it? Seems weird he was fine until I'd done that.

Otherwise, what else could it be?

  2. Check that the cutoff solenoid on the side of the carb hasn’t packed up. It should click when you turn the ignition on. If it doesn’t, it’s dead, and will stop the engine idling (although it’ll run fine above idle).

Mine did exactly the same ran perfect then one day cut out at every junction.
Turned out to be a tiny bit of grit in the idle jet.

    Could be an air leak.

As above, plus A good service, and check all your warm air pick up kit is in order. (I'm assuming 1600cc, standard carb and airfilter?)

  9. Check the idle jet. Blast some at air over it and don’t screw it back too tight
Then if this doesn’t sort it check for air leaks

After welding and grinding there may have been a bit more grot in the air .. so dirt in the idle jet might be a possibility.

  11. Blocked fuel filter or air filter
