Cut out and won't start

  1. Tried to take the bus out this morning and just about got off the drive and it cut out and won't start.

    So far:

Tested fuel and got good flow.

Tested for spark by pulling a spark plug and resting it on an earth - no spark.

Changed rotor and cap (electronic ignition) - got a spark and the bus fired. Reversed off the drive and it cut out again. Now no spark. I think I have it narrowed down do either coil or electronic ignition module. I don't have any points to revert back to to test.

Checked coil resistance and I have 3ohms on primary and just over 9000ohms on secondary so looks ok (presume).

Pulled centre lead on dizzy and held it near to dizzy body - no spark.

It is a flamethrower coil, that came with the bus, so no idea how old it is. Could it be coil or could it still be electronic ignition?

Also, does anyone in south Norfolk or Norwich area have a coil I could test with?

    Cheers

  2. Those numbers sound OK for the coil..

  3. That's what I am thinking.

  4. Worst situation:

Remembered a mate just got a beetle. Legged it around and borrowed his coil. This did not work, so I put my one back thinking it was the electronic ignition that had gone and the bus fired up!
God knows what the fault was now. I might have to buy a couple of spares just in case.

I would say it's the Leccy ignition module about to give up. I would get a spare for the tool box

How’s the feed to the coil ?
    How’s the battery terminals ?
How’s the earth lead to the engine?
You could run a lead from the battery to the coil to rule out the van wireing

  9. Battery terminals are fine as it cranks over easily
    I will check earth
Could do. Seems odd that removing/refitting coil has got it going. I will check the spade connectors on the coil too.

  10. Re-crimped all the spade connectors on the coil and did a 30min round trip to Norwich.

    Seems fine now.

The OG spade connectors can micro crack, lose their grip and come loose. You can tell this by the way the spades fall apart when you give them a squeeze with pliers after cleaning the coil tags.
