Crushable washer?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by S1mon, May 29, 2014.

  1. so gonna do an oil change and need a crushable washer i have a little nut n bolt shop near work, can some one tell me a size and or what one looks like.

    thanks!

  2. Alternatively, go on ebay and buy a box of assorted copper washers.

  3. I have a type 4 and can never seem to get the correct size via sites, so I took the old washer/sump nut, to the local car spares shop and they had a fast selection of sump washers, (copper that crushes on tightening and seals) Get a few while your there.

  4. Thanks guys was going to do it tonight and can only nip out lunchtime... as in london bugger all here.

  5. RE -anneal & re use the old one ;o)

Heat up to cherry red with a blow torch & drop in a bucket of water.
You'll get a few uses before it becomes too thin and squished to use any more.

  7. For which engine?

I thought the washer is usually included with the oil strainer gasket set?

  11. That will be a no then mate

  12. I recently bought an oil strainer gasket set from JK for my type 4 engine, which I haven't used yet. There is a washer in there - it's approx the size of a new 5p piece, and roughly the same thickness.

Hopefully it will fit the sump plug. My strainer plate doesn't have a drain plug - though it looks like yours does...

  20. Get down to Halfrauds. They may have crush washers in their little multi-pack things.
