Cruise control on the column

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Happycamper, Jan 17, 2015.

  1. I have cruise control on my 1978 Champagne van, it makes a hissing noise and a click when I press the 'set' button but no crusing....
    (only cursing)

I'm assuming it's an after sales extra as it doesn't show up on the m-plate decoder or on any websites I've searched.

Has anyone got one/ fixed one or know anything about this optional extra?

@Merlin Cat has something under her van that looked like it may be cruise control.
No idea if it works though

  3. Likely to be vacuum-operated, so I'd check all relevant pipes for vacuum leaks as a starting point. Hissing implies there's a leak somewhere.

As @Baysearcher says I do indeed have cruise control on my 78 US import Landmark conversion. I darednt try it incase it goes on and won't turn off!

Underneath it looks like the chain from a plug/old style key ring!

  14. Normally it is vacuum operated so you may have a leak in a hose somewhere by that is the best I can do

  15. Bricks are not efficient.
I generally find that if I shove my walking stick between the accelerator pedal and the steering wheel, being a short-arsed bit of a chap, this gives about three quarter throttle under normal conditions and disengages instantly when it is time to swerve around some idiot or other.

I'm almost certain there was a cruise control available for Late Bays, a guy out here got hold of a NOS one for his restoration. Official VW part as I recall.

  17. My last 4 or 5 daily drivers have had cruise control and frankly in the UK it's a complete wast of time! It's only much use on motorways at the best of times and ours are so crowded maintaining a fixed speed is nigh on impossible unless you do your driving in the middle of the night:) Modern systems are electronic and part of the engine management but as others said the older set ups are generally vacuum operated so as a starter I would try and trace any pipework from switch to engine and carefully check for leaks.

  19. (Love the look of your van.)

Yes it looks the same, is yours an auto gearbox too?

It doesn't matter that it will be next to useless, in that way it'll match the rest of the van perfectly.
If I had one I'd make it work even if I rarely or never used.
