Crossover Rear Brakes

  1. I am in the process of rebuilding the rear brakes on Gladys - but why are they made out of mixed parts -
The wheel cylinders I have removed are not the same size as my new ones they are smaller.
The shoes i have do not have a pin on them to mount the handbrake movement - and the handbrake spreader will not fit.
Do i use all of these new parts and get a spreader plate and swivel pin for the movement - or should i go and match the exact parts at gsf ????

Dale - Did you order 72 one year only or just a bay kit?

  3. cant remember now i have had them a long time - i can see on the gsf site the different cylinders - thats not really a problem more the shoes with the pin fitted to it

I read this on the samba some time ago and it struck a cord. The difference is the spreader bar and connector. I think that is what they were saying. I had a similar issue with mine and ended up ordering 72 one year only parts. Can't remember much about the details as the garage sorted it in the end. soz

Note that the 72 spreader bar is different and that the fastener on the rear most shoe is a pin with a special clip (not shown in the diagrams?). You can see this clip in the pic above and there is a pic in my gallery.

  5. I dont think you will get the shoes with the pins fitted to them, you might be able to get them separatly

from memory, I resused the old pins after cleaning them up .....they were pretty tricky to remove from the old shoes iirc

I'm pretty sure the cylinders I bought were the same as the old ones

  6. life saver I will get a couple of new pins and swap the cylinders over and should be good to go

  7. from memory, I dont think there were enough horse shoe clips in the fitting kits .....also remember to put the very small thin washer over the pin, as I think the horse shoe clip can foul on the leaver with out it

I've been told the middle bar can be prone to wear, so a blob of weld in the 'u' cut out that goes around the pin may help (once filed to rouhly the right shape)
