Crankshaft pulley removal

  1. Hello
I'm looking to remove the crankshaft pulley on my 1600 type 1 engine, with engine in.
Any ideas on removing it without a pulley removal tool?
    Thanks

  2. A wide three-legged puller should get it off if you're careful. Stick a small socket down the bolt hole for the puller tip to run in.

  3. I've read about people levering it off with a big flat end screwdriver (or a jemmy), but I wouldn't recommend it, personally. If this is your only option, try heating the pulley up first. If you don't fancy buying a pulley puller (easiest option, but quality varies), depending on the type of pulley you have, you can make your own tool from a piece of steel flat bar...this need two holes drilling thru, inline with the holes in the pulley (you may not have any...buy a hooked puller)...
put two pieces of aluminium flat bar behind the pulley wheel, against the crankcase....
place the steel flat bar against the pulley face and feed a bolt (eg M8) thru each hole and the pulley...
wind a nut onto the bolts now protuding behind the pulley....
hold this nut with a spanner and start to wind the bolt in.....

as the bolt end presses against the ali flat bar (see above), it draws the pulley off

I did this, but the easiest option is buy a proper aircooled puller

this is the hook type puller designed for aircooled pulleys...never used one....available on fleabay, or make your own:thumbsup:

  5. I take it I can do this with engine in?
