Crankshaft endfloat

  1. If there is to much float does not mean case is scrap line bore and bigger bearing can be a solution but your not gonna know for sure until you split the case :) as it may of been done already and you can only take so much out of the bearing seats.

  2. Worth double-checking again. Are there 3 shims in place?

If the end float is out of spec, may well be that the case has an indentation in it that's allowing the bearing itself to move. This can be fixed by having the case web machined and fitting an oversized bearing. You can't shim it out.

But...if it's only slightly out of spec, and the engine's got good oil pressure and compression, you might just want to use it rather than the hassle of splitting the case. It'll likely run happily for thousands of miles.

Definitely 3 shims but the inner one is burred over towards the engine on the outer edge, which doesn't look right. Double checked endlfoat is 25 thou. :(

  4. But you were measuring 6/7 thou originally with no shims ? Sure you're measuring right?

If you've got new heads etc, you might want to split the case. The endfloat - if it is there - can be removed by machining. Prob worth having it line bored as well.

Initially I was measuring without the flywheel on as I didn't know what I was doing! Heads are big valve 41/37 and pistons and barrels are brand new 96mm. Really hope the case is OK - even with some work if necessary.

IF you find that the bearings are a loose fit into case saddles after you have split it, this is telling you that it does need an align bore. The Engine shop are good at doing this task, But ask them 1st to measure it to see what main bearings you will need and see if they can supply them. Some times they only have bearings 2 sizes up. You want to have case cut in the next size only so as if it needs doing again in the future the case hasn't been cut close to its limit. So get them to tell you what size mains you need , then purchase the bearings before they cut it. The bearings you might need can be hard to find.
