I'm about to swap the flywheel on my type 4 to attempt to stop the crankshaft oil seal leaking (will change the seal too). Suspect checking the crankshaft endplay is a good idea, but have no dial gauge. Can it be done with feeler gauges? If not any can anyone recommend a cheap gauge that will do? Lots on eBay. Will a generic magnetic stand do?
I think it has to be a dial gauge! They can be cheap enough to buy, here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/2714...3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108 that will be more than adequate for your purpose - we have a couple at work but they cost £200 ish with full UKAS Calibration
Mine was 50p at a boot sale. You can do it with feeler guages, https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/AC000125/tool-end-float/ but a dial guage it much better and Mork's link is the same price! Good value, snap one up.
In fact you should find the endfloat is the same with a different flywheel, but it's not worth the risk.
