Without wishing to start a 450-post Samba-style argument...what would you say the main purpose of case bearing dowels is? I'd say it's primarily to locate the shell in the correct position, so the oiler holes end up where they should be. The "squish" of the shells/case clamping actually holds them in position and prevents them from spinning. Discuss.
Initially, yes. Once the bearings have pounded away a bit the grip loosens, then the pins stop the bearings moving. Especially on number 1 where the bearing is being pushed all over the place until even the dowel pin starts wobbling too.
Both depending on the condition of the engine, new built will be aligment, older engine will rely on the dowels to maintain position.
The dowels are simply to locate the bearing in the correct position during assembly, bearing crush prevents them turning, if the bearing moves the crankcase is toast. Or the wrong size bearing is fitted.
Was going to say something then realised I'd misinterpreted. TLB should have a button to delete one's own posts, say within 5 minutes. A "." is the best you can do.
