Crank install question... Timing gear dots?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by jazz625, Nov 19, 2013.

  1. Hello my technical buddies.

    Tonight I installed the crank. I followed the guide in the Tom Wilson book.
    I lowered in the crank holding rod #1 in the up position, and rod #2 in the down position.
    Rotor is pointing to the mark on the distributed case.

    All good so far. But reading the book, I expected to see the two dots on the timing gear aligned with the case edge, pointing to the right as you look at it ( which is towards the real bottom of the case)

    But for me it's not! It's pointing up as you look at it (with the case on its side of course)

    Is the right?

    The gear is on a key so as long as the camshaft marks are put in the right placeon the gear its right

  5. You rotate the crank and install the cam. When they're aligned, 1 cam dot between 2 crank dots they line up in line with the case half. Like so;

    At least they do on the type 4. I've never done a lawnmower but assume its all the same?
    :)

  6. Thank you Mr Joker.
    It was the need to rotate the crank once installed that confused me.
    If you read Tom Wilson's book, it emplies that once you drop the crank in, the dots should already be in line with the case ready for the Cam Gear.
    Thanks again, hopfully I will have the built before the grass gets too long!
