CPAP/inverter question

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Robert Thomas, Jun 8, 2017.

  1. Hi I have to use a Resmed autoset spirit S8 CPAP device and am having to camp non hook up.
I've got a very young fully charged 70ah leisure battery and I've just bought a Ring 300w inverter
Can anyone tell me how long it'll last?

  2. Depends how much power it uses.

You need to know how many amps it draws.

as above but it will not be long

  5. check operating instructions for power usage. Isnt there a DC supply unit available for it (you may find there is). power requirements say about 21 watts so that less than 2 amps. Dependant upon hours of usage and assuming its a steady state draw then multiply that by the 2 amps and divide it into your battery rating and that should give you an idea.

Battery rating divided by the device power rating. Not sure what the inverter losses would be but id err on the safe side and so 50ah available which would potentially give 25 hours use. If a DC power supply option is available id go for that I think!

  6. There is a dc unit but I can't get one in time, normally I hook up,
    Multiply what by what?

Following @Dicky About a day before it heads into battery damage territory.. Assume you will get 2/3 battery capacity and worse a 300 watt inverter will not be that efficient at 10% or less rated power. It will draw maybe half an amp or more just to stay turned on.
You will do better with a 12 volt direct supply and more realistically get a small 4 stroke generator or 100 watt solar cell to keep going.
You can always run the engine at a fast idle for a couple of hours to top up the battery.. or take a second battery with a mains charger you can persuade a friendly farmer to charge up and keep swapping it.

  8. typo - sorry. just devide the available ampere hours by 2 and that would give you a ballpark figure. Potentially 35 hours but it wont be! id bank on 25 I think and anything else would be a bonus (guess you need to be pretty confident but if stuck then feed it from the starter battery if your leisure doesn't do it. you can always get a jump start!

  9. So two nights for about 6-8 hrs per night should be ok!

Yeh I get to live till morning

  10. good point - inverters aren't efficient and will eat power.

  11. theoretically yes but the alarm will kick off if the power goes so hopefully you wont wake up dead!

Depending on how important this machine is, I'd probably be doing a bit of research with the supplier / manufacturer rather then a load of blokes on a VW forum.
    Just saying.

  13. Do you not remember my dash clock thread?
No alarms or annoying ticking clock issues for me buddy, I'm deaf!

  14. Profoundly deaf? Have to say. I take my aids out at night for a good nights sleep but I can hear the alarm clock fine so not too bad!. An ex girlfriend was deaf. first time I slept at hers the vibrating pad in the bed frightened the carp out of me!

  15. Deefo (pun intended) unable to hear clocks or alarms. However the advantage is my bus always sounds great and really quiet
