Covering/Storing Your Camper

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Motspur Hotspur, Apr 5, 2015.

  1. Hi Everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster! I'm in the market for a T2 and 99% going to go all in with a restored = bloody expensive one, currently got my eyes on one over at VW Kampers.

Before I take the plunge into VW Utopia I just wanted opinions on covering your pride and joy, one of the things I have to contend with is a sodding tree that overhangs my drive, it's council planted and despite much moaning and groaning they refuse to trim/lop it. From May to October it relentlessly drops sapp all over the place which wouldn't be doing me any favours, I already have a CRV and that's a real dog to keep clean.

I was wondering if anyone on here has similar problems and how they get around it, my thought is to get an all year cover and take it off when we are using the T2.

    What do people think?

Great site by the way, just need a camper to go with it now!

There's mixed feelings whether covers do more harm than good to paintwork but in your position I'd use one. There's some breathable ones around which I'd go for if it was me.

Yes, I'd definitely take the cover off when you're using the bus.....

There are good and bad covers apparently. Storm Force are supposed to be good.

  4. Nah I was going to cut a big hole in the drivers side and everyone else can become mushrooms! Thought it might preserve the paintwork!

  5. I use a breathable cover just over the winter which has been very good but needed to have extra ropes added in very high winds

  8. Mine seemed to keep the van damp in all honesty and it was a breathable one ,just wash and wax it

  9. i'll lend you my chainsaw, then you can chop the damn tree down. i would of thought if it is overhanging your property then you would be within your rights to prune it back a bit, like alot.............

  10. I'd been agonising over which cover to buy as my bus is stored in a facility when not in use and so open to the elements. I spent ages reading various websites, forums and reviews but in the end went for a 'Hamilton Classics' cover as it seemed to be the best between cost and durability....but at £220 it's still not cheap.
Anyway, went to collect the bus today and unfortunately the straps holding the front of the cover had given way in the wind. As a result the cover had been lifted up and off the bus and ended up on the ground behind the van, covered in debris on the inside and with a large rip/hole due to the stones/gravel around the area.

Suffice to say for that sort of money I was gutted, especially after only a couple of weeks use. So I wouldn't recommend the Hamilton one unfortunately. The Protec's and Stormforce ones are supposed to be very good and both were on my shortlist.

  11. Thanks Gazaloid, I'll bear that in mind, sorry your cover hasn't worked out. Better luck in the future.

I use a Hamilton Classics one...it's much better if you tuck it up and over the front and rear wheels.

If you are not going to use it for a while maybe an extra coat of wax might help with the sap....clay bar takes sap off really well, but need to re wax afterwards.

    Get one of these
    [IMG]
You can drive in and out of it
If anyone moans tell them to get the council to cut the bloody tree down then you wouldn't need it

  17. You are within your rights to trim back any overhanging branches that cross your boundary.Cut back to the boundary and leave the cut wood next to the tree. You can´t keep the wood.
