Coughing and spluttering wile pulling away/only 700 RPM @ idle

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by dubster, Aug 29, 2011.

  1. After the fire I have now replaced the bits I can and done a basic service and its made it round the block for a first run. I checked and adjusted engine tappets/rocker valves (whatever you want to call them) timed the engine to 7.5 degrees and checked the gap on the points. I also bought a tachometer which is showing the engine RPM (warm and at idle) at just under 700, I thought this had to be around 900 for a type 4. I seem to be getting a lot of coughing and spluttering when I pull away at low revs and the pick up is slow, then at speed I get the odd (hard to write a sound) pfdt noise. Had this problem before the fire but want it checked now in case it had something to do with the cause.

Anyone got any suggestions on what to check? I am guessing carbs, is the engine RPM too slow, could that cause this? If so is it possible to adjust the idle speed without having anything to balance the carbs with?

    Cheers

  2. there should be an idle adjust screw on the carb/carbs so that you can turn the idle speed up and it wont affect the mixture.

  3. Cheers,

Stock carbs, but do they still need balancing, if I adjust 1 I am guessing the other has to be the same?

  4. yeah i would expect so, i dont have carbs so am not sure tbh. do you gave a bentley manual?

  5. No, not bentley I dont think. Have read about using a uni-syn but havent managed to get one. Wondered if there was an easier way of balancing.

  6. timing..700 bit low for that engine init ....

  7. im in east london if you wanna come rand and use my strobe timing light thingie bruv or ill do it and you make the tea lol

  8. Handy download: http://www.filesonic.com/file/1497324361/T2%20Manual.rar And ratwell.com has an index to the manual on it, there is somthing weird about balancing and adjusting stock carbs they work as a master and slave but i'm not running them on mine so cant be more specific i'm afraid, it sounds like you also should check for airleaks around the inlet manifold and the balance pipes and the vac pipe down to the brake servo if fitted as backfiring can be caused by these and also double check your valve timing as this is another cause of back firing.

its the liitle bits that can really mess with tuning.

I've got a cheapy gunson carb balancer and gunsen colour tune, they're not you workshop stuff but they are cheap and give you a good basis to work off.

I'm in south london so if i can be of any assistance let me know :)

  9. Thanks guys, a bit of carb cleaner has improved things so will probably try and get some to put in the fuel tank.

Was trying to get everything done this weekend to get up to Techenders next weekend. Hopefully if its anything like you both suggested someone there will be able to give me hand. All the timing is done (got a strobe thanks), its just upping that RPM to 900 but its the balancing I am struggling to be able to do.

I would have popped over to see one of you but got the words "haven't you been playing with that bus for long enough this weekend!" so had to give up now.

Thanks for the link too, will look at that.

  10. No worries mate, in that download i think there is a guide to setting up your carbs, and as i say the gunson balancer will balance them its quite simple really but it does work ;)
