Correct Tyre size?

  1. Hello Folks,

Need a bit of tyre advice:
Our camper has 195R14C tyres fitted all around, on what I believe are standard 14" rims.
I need to replace the whole lot, so should I go for 185R14C as this was the original spec?
I don't know why the 195s were fitted, cost perhaps? I do want to keep one of the old tyres as the spare though. Will this be ok?

The van is a '72, but with a later Type IV 2.0L engine and automatic transmission.

    Picture below, incase it helps.

    Thanks in advance!

  2. the 195's will gear the van up a little but make the speedo under read a very small amount

how about 185's up front and 195's on the back

  3. I thought the profile on these tyres were the same? Do the 195 have a smaller profile over the 185?

If the profiles are the same my preference would be to keep the wider 195 tyres
    :)

  4. the 80 bit of the profile is 80% of 185 or 80% of 195

    80% of 195 is a little bigger

1965.18mm rolling circumference on the 185 and 2013.43mm rolling circumference on the 195 so only a little

  5. Thanks for the replies!

As the MoT is due soon, I bit the bullet and ordered a set of 195R14C's all round. Being an auto this gives it slightly longer legs at motorway speeds and I like the wider tyres. Downside is heavier steering.
I went for Goodyear Cargo G28 tyres, £346 inc VAT & fitting for four, from etyres. Not a bad price, and it's a mobile fitter who'll come to me. Important as lots of things are in bits at the moment.
