Copper NUTS!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Buddy Hawks, Sep 28, 2017.

  1. I have normal nuts and some copper nuts, are copper manifold nuts ok to use on an air cooled engine.

I have a handful of nuts and can't decide, Ta :)

  2. Copper is a very soft material and will strip ...usually copper coated steel

  3. Should use copper flashed nuts.... I bought a bag of 50 which will cover me for a few exhaust "offs"

  5. Mine are copper flashed and still okay years later. ( a great effort needed to avoid setting @snotty off )

  7. I tried brass - but also needed a locking washer as they werent self-locking and that left me a little short on a couple of studs....

  8. I found they tended to slacken off in time. Something I attributed to their thermal coefficient of expansion and the inability to cope with a severe hot/cold cycle when fitted on a steel stud.. Though come to think of it brass nuts were in quite common usage on elderly water cooled engines...

  14. I had a delivery of exhaust and a new cross member yesterday, exhaust is all on today loose not done it up yet and crossmember is going in tomorrow

Not sure whether to put paste where the j tubes go into the box or not, the clamp looks quite sufficient

  16. If you're using the stock "brillo pad" gaskets/clamps, worth smearing a bit of jointing compound on. Can't hurt!

Double check the width of the new one. I had issues with this crossmember when I did mine. It was a tad too big to go between the chassis rails. I bought it from VWH.
