Cooling flaps fail safe position?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Rustydiver, Jun 12, 2012.

  1. Which one is the fail safe position, looking at where the oil cooler is,
    Pic A

    Or pic B

Mine wants to naturally spring back to pic A.

  2. pic a is the open and full cooling over the oil cooler, that is if the stat is fully open or failed open or if the cable snaps. if it still has the spring attachment then they will be forced into pic A position by the spring

Just take them out, They were put there for vans in colder climates to warm up quicker, our weather aint like norway or canada or the like unless you drive your bus in minus temperatures and freezing snow

  4. never seen a cooling flap before in my life. please tell me they're not on my van.

    PSG

  5. My stat has failed , the flaps are open and i have a stat to fit ,but the more i read flap stuff the more confused i get .If the stat is in the clsoed posistion, ie small and then heats up does it pull the cable closing the flaps ?

    confused of chester

  6. The stat opens up to as it heats. This releases tension on the cable and the flaps open.

The stat is there so that the engine gets up to operating temp quickly. Similar way to a watercooled engine.

When i get home I will post pics of how the type 4 cooling system works.

  8. Flaps are there for ALL climates, whether cold or hot. Even in our mild (!) climate, flaps controlled by the stat will start in the closed position to allow the engine to heat up quickly, and then the stat and flaps will try and regulate the temperature to keep it at the optimum operating temperature. You'll probably find that stat operated flaps will only ever be fully open when out on the motorway.

VW is a company operating to make money, therefore everything had a function and was there for a reason. They would have saved millions over the production life of the aircooled engine if they had not had to fit flaps, but they did, and therefore they must have done so for a very good reason. That's good enough for me. And you're free to ignore me, but go and look at www.ratwell.com and see what Richard Atwell has to say about it - there's a couple of lengthy documents about this, with explanations of what they do, and why they're important.

  9. Our local VW Expert, who has been in the trade for over 35 years always removes these flaps !! :(

I'm with Baybirmingham and Zed on this.....

I only learnt this when this guy fitted my new engine...........Without Flaps !!! :(

  11. Sorry people didn't want to start WW3 on TLB, just wanted to know A or B before I put the tinware back on. So it should look like A when there is no able connected.

Now has anybody got a stat and bracket available. Joker I can do some swapsies if you got any. ;)

  12. i wish the po never removed mine, the whole set up is missing. i agree that it was fitted for a reason so it is needed.
anyone got a full set up for sale?
