Converting Dynamo to Alternator

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by moortarn, Sep 5, 2015.

  1. Hi all, has anyone any experience on converting from a 38A Dynamo to 55A Alternator either using the Just Kampers conversion or any other, just need to know how difficult and any issues. Thanks in advance.

  2. yes easy enough to do

I think from memory the alternator stand might be different to the dynamo ones, I had to cut a bit off of one of the lugs on the alternator to get mine to sit level, but I think mine was a 75A alternator

  3. I think there is a different backing plate too

  4. Looking on the JK site it appears that you get a new stand, backing plate and oil pump with the Kit.

  5. Fuel pump pushrod will be a different length too.

  6. Keep an eye on the accelerator pump throttle linkage on the carb; depending on the alternator it may just foul the alternator casing in which case you can file the casing down a little to create clearance. Simple enough.

  7. oil pump...

or bend it ,with a hammer...:)

  8. why would you need to change the oil pump when replacing the dynamo?

I've done this on a couple of split buses & all I had to do was replace the dynamo with the alternator, different stand & possible carb clearance issue if still running single carb, and of course the wiring, although late bay may be different ??

  9. Sorry I meant Fuel oil pump!

  10. Is it a diesel ;)?

  11. Nah, just my terminology, I'm at work in a power station, get used to saying Fuel oil pump!

  12. Can you not nick one of the generators and stick that in your van ;)?
