Converting a T25 091 Gear Box for a Bay

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by burntout, Sep 6, 2014.

  1. Is it possible?

Its the gear linkage side I am worried about - can you just swap over the nose cone or is it more complicated than that?

  2. More complicated than that unfortunately.:(
The bay gearbox has the shift linkage on the nosecone.

T25 has linkage on the side (between nosecone and where CV joint attaches).

  3. You can this is a company in America who sell a conversion kit, there was a link on VzI if you searched t25 to bay gearbox I believe it was about 450 dollars plus taxes and delivery,

If it was easy, they wouldn't be so cheap. :(

  5. Thanks folks, thought as much.

  6. Have you got a t25 gearbox that you want to convert?

My understanding us there are two types of t25 6 rib box, one is not convertible, one is with nose cone adaptor.

The box I have was a t25 box converted by Bears...it came with an invoice sufficiently expensive to make sourcing a known good bay one very viable.

It seems there is no cheap way to do it....maybe in a few years 3D printing might make it viable, in which case the t25 boxes might give sway.

The alternatives like the Freeway Flyer require a 6 rib box on exchange. :(

  8. Thankfully my spare T25 091 gearbox has the linkage on the nosecone. Will get it rebuilt at some point in the future although I already have an 091 fitted to Lime.

  9. Can you modify the gear linkage to stick rather than on the gearbox ? I am not an experienced engineer so please don't laugh too much !!!!

  10. Anything is possible with enough time, money and skill

  11. I'm glad I've got a 6 rib 'box in my spares collection. I'll be able to sell it and retire in a few years:)

  12. I'm sure it could be done, maybe using the T25 gearstick and linkage as well, similar ish set up to the bay

  13. You could fit the complete t25 box, linkage and shifter in a bay using the bay bellhousing. Just hte front mount to fad up then. I think theres someone on VWKD forum who has done it.
You could always go cable shift instead of a solid linkage. No messing with moving conduits etc. ;)

  14. Just looked at the side shift adaptor from weddle on the link above. Is anyone importing these ?I reckon they would sell well!!!

  15. I've been looking into this for a while now, as I believe already said you need an earlier box and can change over bother ends to go in a bay but if I'm honest, contrary to popular belief there are quite a few six ribs out there, it's just a question of getting one at the right price at the right time.
Even if it turns out to be rubbish you've still saved loads as an exchange box and atleast you'll be able to have the right box refurbed by Bears or the like.

Dave, when you get yours try all the gears with molegrips on the shaft. Turn input shaft and the driveshaft flanges should turn in each gear. It would be prudent to get yourself a hockey stick ball and a gasket (set?), take off the nosecone and change the ball before fitting as it would be a PITA to have to do it all again for a £5 part. :)

  17. Cheers Zed, I need to find out a bit more about what I've got to check on it when I collect. I've asked him about the box and he's said he bought it for his bus but sold it, fingers crossed!
How do you check the gears? Maybe of use to others on this thread when buys gearboxes?

  18. Sounds like you're going it the right direction. Can the T25 have a 5 speed as well? Please,Please, please

  19. The 5th gear on T25 5 speed boxes was an afterthought on VWs part and seems to be the weakest link in them. Same as 4th gear on a syncro box.
